Materials

Aluminum foil

Cupcake tin or cupcake baking pan

Pair of scissors

Steps to make foil cupcake liners

  1. Use a ruler or measuring tape to measure the diameter of your cupcake pan’s cups and add 1 inch to that measurement. That’s the diameter of the foil you’ll have to cut.
  2. Cut several circles out of the aluminum foil using scissors, depending on how many foil cups liners you need. The important thing is to cut approximately 1 inch larger than the outside edge of the cupcake molds.
  3. Flip over your cupcake tin or muffin pan, and shape a square of foil over the cup upside down to make a shape similar to a dome. Press it into your cupcake liner shape and fold the edges.
  4. Repeat until you get enough cupcake liners. Once each molded foil has the right shape and size, you can place them inside the cupcake hole and press until the foil wrappers fit perfectly. You can cut the edges around the top to form a straight line using a pair of scissors.

Alternative paper cupcake liners

Looking for another great way to make your own liners? If you have regular parchment paper or wax paper, then you can use them too! Use parchment paper or wax paper to make your own cupcake liners.

You’ll need a pair of scissors, your paper, and a small glass or a small can. Make sure the bottom of the glass fits in the holes of your cupcake tray. Then, follow the same process: Cut your paper into approximately six-inch squares, flip your cup upside down, place your parchment paper on your cup and press it until a crease is formed. Mold your paper is molded along the edge of the glass. Last, put your cupcake liner in your muffin tin and let it sit for a minute or two until the bottom of the wrapper fits nicely in the cup of the pan. If it’s the right size, repeat the steps. Otherwise, cut half an inch more or less until you get the perfect cupcake liner size.

Tips

You have your own DIY cupcake liners – what’s next? Now it’s time to make your favorite cupcakes! Follow your typical baking process to create a cupcake batter that you love. Once you are ready to make your baked goods, follow these tips for the best results:

  • To avoid your foil liners from sticking to the cupcake batter, spray them with cooking spray. You can also use melted butter or regular oil.
  • If your foil has a shiny side and a dull side, always make sure that the dull side is facing inwards, since that’s the non-stick side.
  • Lastly, you don’t need to bake cupcakes with liners. Yes, liners add some nice decoration and make cupcakes easier to handle when you’re with more people, but ultimately, you can simply spray your pan with non-stick spray or brush it with melted butter and pour your batter directly.
