Extras/Substitutions/Specific diets (gluten free, keto, vegetarian, etc.)

  • You can use any kind of ground meat with this recipe: ground beef, ground turkey, and ground chicken all taste great!
  • Save time on busy weeknights from shredding cabbage and carrots by grabbing a fresh bag of coleslaw mix.
  • Fresh is best, but if not available at your local grocery stores then garlic powder and ginger powder will do.

Equipment

Large skillet or wok

Large bowl

Knife

Spatula

Instructions

  1. Heat a large high-sided skillet over medium-high heat. Add sausage and cook, breaking the meat into small pieces as it cooks, for approximately 5-6 minutes. Once sausage is no longer pink, remove from heat and carefully drain excess grease from pan.
  2. Safety Tip: Wipe off any excess fat that drips down the side of the pan before returning to burner.
  3. Return skillet to heat. Add water or chicken broth and scrape up brown bits from the bottom of the pan with a spatula. Reduce to medium heat and add shredded cabbage, carrots, garlic powder, sesame oil, ground ginger, and green onions. Season with salt and black pepper, to taste, and cook, stirring frequently, until the cabbage wilts and the carrot softens, approximately 4-5 minutes.
  4. Add rice vinegar and liquid aminos and stir to combine. Cook another 1-2 minutes or until heated through. Remove from heat and transfer to a serving platter or bowl. Sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds, if using, and serve immediately. Enjoy!

Cooking Tips

Heat the pan first – the oil should shimmer when it hits the pan

Make sure the oil has time to heat; the meat should sizzle when it hits the oil

Likewise the vegetables should also sizzle when added

Serving

Plating and garnishing

Garnish with red pepper flakes to spice it up and add color, or drizzle with spicy mayo sauce.

Pairs with

  • Sparkling wine or champagne
  • Beer – our favorite is Bass ale
  • Sake
